The first Mitsubishi was named "Model A" and was manufactured in Japan in 1917. However, throughout the wartime era the company needed to focus on commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses, and it was not until the 1960s that Mitsubishi was able to concentrate on its car production. Mitsubishi released the 500 in 1960, followed by the Minica and Colt two years afterwards and these sold in moderately good numbers. It was the introduction of the truly innovative Galant in 1969 that was the start of big things for Mitsubishi and the company received many awards for this model. In 1970, the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation was formed and from this decade onwards worked closely with DaimlerChrysler. The two companies have been working together, with Mitsubishi assembling some parts for Chrysler vehicles for over 30 years. |
In 1982 the Shogun was launched and was greeted with much excitement as it was the first in a new style of 4x4. It won prestigious "Car of the Year" awards in many European countries and took first place in the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, affirming its place at the top of the 4x4 charts. Its success has continued with new styling and upgrading, resulting in another 7 Dakar Rally wins under its belt.
