The name “Fiat” is an acronym that comes from “Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino”, which means “Italian Car Factory of Turin”. Fiat was started in 1899 by a group of Italian men who worked together on the board of the company. Giovanni Agnelli was one of the most passionate and visionary men on the board and by 1902 had been promoted to managing director. His grandson, Gianni Agnelli, was chairman of the Fiat board from 1966 until his death in 2004. The first Fiat factory was built in Italy in 1900, but the company soon expanded until in 1908, Fiat Automobile Co. was formed in America. |
During the 1910s and 1920s, Fiat celebrated several firsts; one for technology and one for car design. The technological development was the cardan transmission, whilst the design development was that of fitting four seats in a car.
The 1950s were an era of innovation and research with heating and ventilation systems being installed for the first time in Fiat cars.
From the 1970s to the present day, Fiat has been producing some very popular and successful cars. They have won the “Car of the Year” title 11 times; more often than any other manufacturer.
