Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1946 by Chung Ju-Yung, a young Korean businessman. The next year he went on to form Hyundai Civil Engineering Company and enjoyed several prestigious building contracts through the 50s. The two companies were merged together during this time and then separated in 1967. Hyundai was advised that importing cars would be much cheaper than producing them. However, Chung Ju-Kung persisted and his determination paid off. The Pony, Korea ’s first home-manufactured car, was introduced in 1974 and was met with great interest and enthusiasm by the public. |
During the 1970s many Hyundai Ponys were exported to both South America and countries within Europe, such as Belgium. This success was built upon when the Pony was updated in 1982, with the UK and Canada both receiving Hyundai Pony IIs.
By 1989 Hyundai had produced over 3 million cars and just two years later had reached the 4 million marker. The successes have continued up until the present day where Hyundai are now vying for the position as 5th largest car manufacturer in the world.
