The Rover Company Ltd was set up in 1906 as an off-shoot company from a bicycle manufacturer that had started venturing into the automobile trade. In 1920, the first market successful Rover car was produced. With a reputation for quality and reliability, the 8 hp car sold well, with records showing 17,000 purchases in 5 years. The 50s and 60s were a time of great achievement for Rover. The Land Rover was a roaring success with thousands of units sold, and the P5 and P6 saloons were popular. |
In 1967, Rover merged with the Leyland Corporation, which then merged with another company to become British Leyland. During the 70s, some severe cutbacks meant that one of the British factories that were producing Rovers was closed down.
In 1994 BMW bought Rover and developed the Rover 75 to replace the 600 and 800 which were developed in the 1980s. The Rover 75 won multiple international awards and was praised for its style and quality of ride.
In 1999, BMW sold most of Rover’s products, but kept Mini and Austin , although it has yet to do anything with the Austin brand. The current owner of Rover is the Nanjing Automobile Group, who is planning to start selling the Rover 75 packaged as the MG 7 in 2007.
