As Spain did not have a native car manufacturer, during the 1940s the government collaborated with Fiat and created a brand that could be marketed as Spanish to the public. Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo or SEAT, as it is more frequently known, was formed in 1950. The first SEAT to be produced was the 1400 in 1953, which had sold over 100,000 units by the time it was replaced in 1963. The 600 was incredibly popular throughout the late 50s and throughout the 60s, and waiting lists of up to 4 years were recorded during its early production days. In 1972 came the 127, a well-selling car that won a Car of the Year award and achieved the million unit milestone for SEAT. No other SEAT would enjoy this level of sales until the Ibiza in 1992. |
SEAT and Fiat parted ways in the early 1980s and by 1986 SEAT had become part of the Volkswagen Group. Exchanging factory production for technology and design information from Volkswagen, SEAT was able to start a range of successful small cars, such as the Cordoba and Toledo . During the 90s, both these cars saw excellent sales figures.
SEAT is now a very well-known manufacturer across Europe with a successful range of cars of which more than 12 million have been sold.
