In 1895 two men from the Czech Republic, Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement, started up a company called Skoda that produced bicycles. By the early 1900s it had expanded to produce motorcycles and had created its first successful car model, the Voiturette. The early years in car manufacture were very good for Skoda and by 1925 so many models were being produced that the company merged with Pilsen, the Czech Republic ’s biggest manufacturer. During the 1930s, developments in design and engineering lead to the creation of the Skoda Superb. |
During the 1960s, Skoda enjoyed success with the Octavia model with in excess of 350,000 units sold between 1959 and 1971. However, the economic climate of the 70s and 80s prevented Skoda from fully breaking into the Western market and during these decades Skodas were mainly made for customers in Eastern Europe .
In 1991, Skoda joined VW, Audi and Seat as part of VW Konzern. This proved a real turning point for Skoda, which has created some new, innovative designs in cooperation with VW in recent years. The style and engineering changes that have been made are evidence of the way Skoda has been trying to shrug off its image in favour of a more positive one with which to enter the global market.
This appears to be working, with more than 1,000,000 new model Octavias sold by 2004 and other models such as the Fabia and Superb becoming much more common on the roads.
