Micho Suzuki created Suzuki Loom Works in Japan in 1909 and found making sewing machines to be a very profitable line of business. However, he could see that that diversifying would be beneficial, and began to explore the possibilities of going into car manufacture. In the 30s he produced several prototypes, although none were made up. When the cotton industry collapsed in 1951, Suzuki decided to venture into business making motorcycles. The company experienced huge sales, with over 6,000 motorcycles a month being sold. Suzuki has been incredibly successful in motorcycle production and racing ever since this time. |
In 1955, the first Suzuki car was produced. It was called the Suzulight and was just 360 cc. However, it proved enormously popular – even more so than the motorcycles that had proven so successful.
Suzuki car production was kept within Japan until the early 1980s, when Suzuki decided to start expanding its enterprise. Plants were built in India, Pakistan, and South America, and accordingly the number of exports increased, with the milestone of 2 million cars being reached in 1987.
Since this time, Suzuki has carried on expanding. The company now owns 22 manufacturing plants in 19 countries and exports to over 160 other countries. By 2001, 30 million Suzuki cars had been purchased worldwide.
