Ferdinand Porsche, father of Ferry Porsche who invented Porsche cars, was the original creator of the first Volkswagens in Germany in 1935. Hitler believed that cars should be available for the masses, and in 1933 he met with Ferdinand Porsche to arrange the first Volkswagen prototypes. Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German, and it was Hitler’s influence that gave this now famous and successful car company its name. Volkswagen were successful in their prototypes, and during the war made vehicles for Germany , although in 1945 the British took over the factory. The company was worth very little after the war, and ownership was hastily given back to Germany by the British in 1949. |
The Volkswagen transporter and legendary Beetle were both created in 1950, and had very different degrees of market success. A million Beetles were sold by 1954, while only 250,000 transporters were manufactured.
From the 1950s onwards, Volkswagen factories were built in a number of countries, including South Africa, United States, Great Britain, and Brazil.
The success of the Volkswagen Beetle hit its peak in the 1960s, when over 1 million units a year were being sold, and by 1973 over 16 million Beetles had been manufactured. Falling sales in the 70s resulted in the company deciding to wind down Beetle production and start concentrating on creating the Volkswagen Golf.
Since 1974, the Volkswagen Golf has seen sales average at 2,100 a day. It has received nominations for European Car of the Year and has come runner up several times, and finally won the title in 1992. The New Golf has seen considerable success and accounts for around 35% of all Volkswagen cars sold worldwide and 46% in Europe .
