A man and his car - reunited after 37 years
A sports car stolen from New York in 1969 has turned up en route to Sweden and been reunitedwith its original owner, an ex-guitar salesman who was unable to afford proper motor insurance.
Discovered in a Californian shipping crate destined for Scandanavia, the Corvette was randomly checked by customs officials and its fishy past was uncovered. Detectives in New York were then dispatched to establish the original owner, trawling through 10,000 archived stolen car records.
He was finally identified as Alan Poster, a 63-year-old single father now living in California. When he bought the car 37 years ago he was so poor that he had to settle for a cheap car insurance that didn’t cover it for theft. As a result he was never compensated for the stolen vehicle and so it if officially still belongs to him.
The ex-guitar salesman, now a company director, was amazed when police called to say that they had found his Corvette from all those years ago. He described it as, “Probably the only car I’ve ever really loved.”
Originally blue, the car is now silver with a red interior and has had an engine replacementat some point over the years. It also has no transmission and Mr Poster has said that he doesn’t plan to use it much.
He now drives a Mercedes, and since that fateful day in 1969, cheap car insurance has never been a priority. You could say that he’s learnt his lesson.
