Booze cruise car insurance warning

A recent survey by Lloyds TSB has revealed that nearly two million Brits drive abroad every year with the sole purpose of buying cheap alcohol. With prices on the Continent far lower than at home, many people fill their car to bursting point in foreign supermarkets, stocking up for parties, barbecues and Christmas.

But car insurance companies are warning of the dangers of driving abroad, and are encouraging car owners to check their policies before they leave. They also advise to find out if the country they’re going to has any special motoring requirements. Spain, for example, requires that all vehicles must carry a spare fan belt and a full set of spare bulbs, as well as the tools needed to change them.

Most car insurance policies provide the holder with the minimum cover required to drive abroad, but it is advisable to contact your provider when you book your tickets. It is also advisable to ensure that you are covered for all eventualities whilst driving abroad, including damage, theft and breakdown.

Many drivers, especially those travelling abroad for a quick soiree around the supermarkets of France, Belgium and Spain have failed to take out adequate breakdown cover, resulting in an enormously expensive payout when they’ve overloaded their car with cheap plonk and broken down.

So before you set off across the Channel, check that car insurance policy; it could just save you a lot of money.
