Brits risk their cheap car insurance by driving abroad

More and more Brits are planning to pour across the Channel this summer to go on driving holidays on the continent, but many don't realise that they are risking their cheap car insurance policy by doing so.

A recent survey by Saga Motor Insurance has discovered that we don't find it as easy to drive abroad as we claim, and many UK residents actually cause chaos on foreign roads.

The car insurance firm found that 59% of holidaymakers fail to make adequate arrangements before they set off, with one in seven forgetting to take their motor insurance documents with them. Failure to keep these papers in the car is actually illegal in many European countries, and police are likely to take a dim view of anyone who can't produce them upon request.

A quarter of those questioned revealed they found driving on the 'wrong' side of the road a challenge, and many admitted to not fully understanding continental roundabouts. When coupled with irritations such as bored children and unforgiving foreign drivers, it is no surprise that many Brits find themselves coming a cropper and getting involved in costly road accidents.

Advising drivers about how not to risk their cheap car insurance, Saga's chief executive, Andrew Goodsell, said, "To limit the chance of getting into difficulty, people should plan their route before they leave and ask their passengers to navigate.

"Driving licences and motor insurance documents are compulsory for driving abroad and should be the first thing you pack."
