Car insurance firm discover bad environmental attitudes
British drivers are stubbornly refusing to swap their gas-guzzling vehicles for more environmentally-friendly models, according to the latest research from a motor insurance firm.
Churchill Car Insurance have revealed that only a shocking one in five motorists are concerned about the impact their cars have on the atmosphere, with a frightening 80% of 4x4 drivers arguing that environmental problems would still exist even if they didn't use such big-engine vehicles.
A quarter of UK drivers told Churchill that they have reduced the size of their car recently, but sheepishly admitted it was to save money on motor insurance, road tax and fuel costs, rather than to cut down on damaging emissions.
The survey also revealed that 30% of men and women who drive Chelsea Tractors - the Land Rover Discoveries and Porsche Cayennes that pump out huge amounts of pollution whilst stuck in London's traffic jams - feel they are unfairly victimised by environmentalists. Many insist they use the 4x4s in order to safeguard themselves in the event of an accident, but green campaigners fail to understand how such an environmentally-damaging vehicle is needed in a busy city.
A spokesperson from Churchill Car Insurance said, "Just days after worrying reports that we need to take drastic steps to avoid environmental meltdown, it's clear motorists are still committed to their gas-guzzling cars.
"There is a small percentage of motorists who are very conscious of the impact their cars are having on the environment and have either scaled their model down or are considering doing so to try and help.
"But most people who have reduced the size or engine capacity of their cars have done so primarily to save money."
Rebecca Pearson from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance experts, commented, "It's everybody's responsibility to take care of the environment, and cutting down on fuel emissions is one way to make an important difference."
