Drivers not discouraged by rising petrol prices

A survey by the online cheap car insurance provider esure has found that fuel prices will have to rise dramatically to prise motorists away from their cars.

It discovered that most British drivers would stick with their car until petrol prices were almost double what they are now - raising them to £1.83 a litre - and only then would they consider taking an alternative form of transport.

Mike Pickard of esure commented, "For many people the absence of cheap public transport means a car is essential in their lives and virtually any price will be paid for petrol."

UK motorists seem to be much less concerned about finding the cheapest fuel prices in the area than they do about getting the best deal on cheap car insurance. The majority of motor insurance customers compare quotes from different companies, whereas only one in three drivers bothers to find out the cheapest petrol station in the area.

Fuel does not seem to be a worrying area for a lot of drivers, despite the fact that prices have almost doubled in the last 10 years. This is especially true for older drivers, who can more readily afford to pay higher costs for the sake of convenience, whereas younger drivers are more likely to worry about the pennies.

Mike Pickard goes on to give some tips for drivers, "Driving steadily and carefully, with no excessive braking or speeding, will not only give you more miles for your money, it could also reduce the likelihood of making a claim on your car insurance."
