Car insurance firm warn of the dangers of sat-nav equipment
Car insurance providers Privilege have revealed that in-car navigation equipment could actually be more of a hindrance than a help to the drivers of Britain.
The motor insurance firm have come to this conclusion after conducting research into the driving habits of 'sat-nav' owners- and the results are somewhat worrying.
11% of drivers admit to having used the controls on their satellite navigation equipment whilst driving, instead of programming their route before setting off. In addition, over half of these people confess that they took their eyes off the road as they did so, causing a danger to themselves and other road users, putting their cheap car insurance at risk in the process.
It's not just the misuse of satellite navigation devices that can cause a risk to motorists, as Privilege Car Insurance divulge that almost 25% of drivers owned-up to reading a map whilst also driving.
Ian Parker, Managing Director of the motor insurance firm, said, "Navigation equipment can be a major distraction while driving. Our research shows that even satellite navigation equipment, if used incorrectly, can lead to driver danger.
"It seems that drivers in the UK are compromising their safety by relying on navigation equipment to get them to their destination, rather than familiarising themselves with their route prior to setting off."
