Student refused car insurance on basis of postcode

A student who has just finished university had a car insurance shock when she moved back to her home in Liverpool.

Hannah Brumfitt notified her cheap car insurance company of the change of address and was stunned when they told her that they would not insure her while she was staying in the L15 postcode area.

Upset at the situation, she said, "I've never had to make a claim, and yet I would have to tell any new insurer I have been refused in the past."

Hannah scrimped and saved while a student of geography at the University of Wales in order to be able to buy a car, which she heavily relies on. She chose a cheap car insurance policy, which at £489 was the best deal on the market she could find.

After she told her local newspaper about her motor insurance problem, the National Insurance and Guarantee Corporation (NIG) offered her a policy as long as she paid an extra £196. It is not known whether she has taken them up on this not-so-cheap car insurance deal.

Her local councillor, Steve Hurst, is appalled at what happened to Hannah and said, "Legally they may be able to do this, but I find it hard to accept that morally they can expect to put this young woman through this situation."
