Cheap car insurance is of no consequence to fallen rock star
Getting a cheap car insurance deal is the last thing on Gary Glitter's mind right now after the fallen rock icon was caged by a Vietnamese court.
Glitter, real name Paul Francis Gadd, was convicted of molesting two young girls at the Communist People's Court in the seaside resort of Vung Tau, and was sentenced to three years in prison. After the trial he was bundled into a police van and taken away to begin his jail term, shouting "I'm innocent. I am innocent" to the waiting media scrum.
The artist who had the huge smash hit, 'I'm the Leader of the Gang' in 1973, and was famous for driving flash cars for which he shelled out thousands for motor insurance, was found guilty of committing illegal acts on minors. Throughout the trial he maintained his innocence and insisted he was teaching the girls English, allowing them to stay overnight because they were scared of ghosts.
Sentencing, judge Hoang Thanh Tung said, "The defendant had exhibited disgusting and ill-intentioned behaviour towards children several times, causing displeasure and condemnation among the public.
"When we speak of his behaviour, we understand right away that he has a sickness. He is sick. He is abnormal."
Mr Glitter will have no chance of patrol until December 2006 and his cell is squalid, mouldy and windswept, giving him plenty of opportunity to daydream about getting a cheap car insurance deal when he is finally released.
