Cheap car insurance under threat from new speed cameras
The chance of getting a cheap car insurance deal could be significantly reduced if Britain's most senior traffic policeman has his way.
Because Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom wants to hide miniature speed cameras in reflective road studs in order to increase the number of speeding drivers that are caught.
And we all know that a speeding conviction can lead to a fine and points, and points on a licence means an increased motor insurance premium.
Brunstrom is renowned as a huge advocate of a tough stance on speeding, championing speed cameras and earning the nickname of the 'Traffic Taliban' from the certain sections of the media. But he insists, "I'm not anti-motorist. I am anti-death."
The miniature cameras have already been used in Australia and Malaysia with great success, but would require a change of legislation if they were to be employed in Britain. They are fitted with number plate recognition technology in order to issue instant tickets, and can also be optimised to identify motorists with no car insurance or road tax.
In addition to his radical speed camera proposals, Brunstrom has also suggested building a holding cell at the Dartford Tunnel in Kent to accommodate the huge numbers of drivers caught speeding at the Thames Crossing.
The Chief Constable's plans have a long way to go before they are implemented, but one thing is for certain, if they are imposed, a lot of people are going to have to kiss goodbye to their cheap car insurance premiums.
