News - Powerful cars found to be greater risk to cheap car insurance

Research has found cheap car insurance providers are accurate when they assess those who drive cars with large engines as being a greater risk.

Admiral, a well-known UK motor insurance firm, discovered that those who drive cars with larger engines have a 69% greater chance of having a speeding conviction than those who have less-powerful cars.

A speeding conviction usually means a loss of cheap car insurance, although it is believed that some motor insurance providers are putting less importance on this because so many people have been caught speeding - around a quarter of the motoring population.

The research by Admiral also found out about the top 10 cars models that are most likely to be driven over the speed limit. The Volvo XC90 is the car most often caught, whilst BMW has a heavy presence in the top 10, with a total of four mentions for its X3, X5, 330 and Z4.

Corrine Aldous, spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented:

"We would encourage motorists who habitually speed to reconsider their driving behaviour. By driving too fast, you are increasing your chance of both having an accident and being charged with speeding, either of which can result in a loss of cheap car insurance."
