Speeding driver could miss out on cheap car insurance
A man who failed to stop when a police officer signalled him over for speeding has been given a 180-day jail sentence.
Kyle Nicholas Kay, 20, drove his Vauxhall Astra directly at a policeman and admitted that he would have hit the officer had he not moved out of the way.
Blackburn Magistrates heard how the policeman was using a laser device to record speeds of passing vehicles when he saw a car travelling in his direction with a Vauxhall Astra overtaking it.
Eddie Harrison, prosecuting said, "He measured the speed of the overtaking vehicle at 50mph in the 30mph zone. A second reading, as the Astra pulled back out into the correct lane, showed 55 mph and when the officer stepped into the road to signal the driver to stop, the car accelerated again."
Kay's dangerous driving could have caused a serious road accident. If motorists may have claimed on their cheap car insurance, they could have lost their no claims bonus and faced paying higher premiums in the future.
Mr Kay was convicted of dangerous driving without motor insurance and a driving licence. He was given a 180-day jail sentence suspended for two years, made subject to a community supervision order, told to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, disqualified for two years and ordered to pay £250 costs.
In the future, Kay may find it difficult getting cheap car insurance because of his conviction.
