Craig Bellamy in trouble over car insurance documents

Craig Bellamy has been ordered by a court to pay a £50 fine after he committed a motor insurance infraction.

The footballer, who is a striker for Liverpool and Wales, got into trouble with the police after he was stopped whilst driving a hire car. He was unable to produce his car insurance certificate and was given 14 days to hand it in to a police station.

However, Mr Bellamy failed to do so and was brought to court charged with driving without insurance and failing to produce an insurance document. He pleaded guilty to the latter charge but the former charge was dropped by the prosecution after Mr Bellamy's solicitor showed the court the car insurance document.

A court official explained, "Apparently it was a hire car and he (Bellamy) had problems obtaining a copy of the insurance to cover him for the date in question. He has pleaded guilty to failing to produce (an insurance certificate) but the substantive matter has now been dismissed."

"It was originally listed for consideration this afternoon but there was a plea entered for the prosecution to consider. Due to the fact it was a guilty plea and the other matter was dismissed, they brought it forward to deal with the case this morning."

Mr Bellamy did not attend the court.

Corrine Aldous of the cheap car insurance company duck2water commented, "We always recommend that our customers keep their motor insurance certificate safe and sound. After all, there isn't much point in getting a cheap car insurance deal if you can't provide the certificate and end up getting fined."
