Drivers call for introduction of car insurance disk
A recent survey by Tesco Car Insurance has revealed that two thirds of drivers would like to see the introduction of compulsory insurance disks in order to help the police identify and stop uninsured motorists.
Tesco's study highlights what some have been saying for years, that the use of a disk, similar to that displayed for road tax, would be the most effective way to stop the huge numbers of uninsured motorists that currently exist.
Official estimates have placed the number of drivers on British roads with no car insurance at over one million, and uninsured drivers cost other motorists an average of £30 in higher premiums.
Displaying a disk to prove that you possess motor insurance is already a legal requirement in many European countries, including France, Italy and Ireland, and several UK car insurance firms are now pushing for British authorities to make it law also.
Allan Burns, head of Tesco Car Insurance said, "While recent changes to the Road Safety Bill give the authorities more power to fine or even confiscate the cars of uninsured drivers, motorists are telling us that more needs to be done to actually identify these drivers on the road."
