Driving to work needn’t cost a bomb

A new survey by Halifax Car Insurance has revealed that the average British worker spends a massive £1,017 each year on driving to work.

But with 38 million seats unoccupied on the motorway every day, the motor insurance firm has expressed its surprise that more people are not splitting the cost of the commute.

Sharing the journey with somebody else and taking the driving in turns can slash as much as £500 from the total annual cost, yet very few people actually bother. In addition to saving money on petrol, less driving naturally means less chance of an accident and so the all-important no claims bonus is better protected.

Halifax Car Insurance discovered that young people are most likely to double-up on the way to work, with about a third of 18 to 24-year-olds picking up a colleague or friend on the way. In contrast, older drivers are less willing to save money, with a tiny one percent of 55 to 64-year-olds admitting to sharing a lift.

Rebecca Pearson from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, online providers of cheap car insurance, said, "It really does make sense to car share on the way to work.

"You'll be saving money, doing your bit for the environment, and what with the introduction of car sharing lanes, could get to work much quicker."
