Eco-friendly drivers could see cheap car insurance rewards
A top motor insurance firm has revealed they are looking at ways to reward policy holders who drive 'green' cars.
There is currently no financial motivation to own a hybrid vehicle as far as car insurance is concerned, but More Than have announced it is something they are considering introducing in the near future.
Research recently undertaken by the motor insurers has shown that as many as one in six people would consider buying a more environmentally friendly car if it would result in a cheaper car insurance policy. More Than feel this is a huge potential market and so are evaluating possible rewards for green car owners.
Motor Insurance Manager, Keith Maxwell, said, "At the moment, insurance policies for hybrid cars and for petrol cars are the same.
"We are looking at how we could reward people who choose an eco-friendly car, in terms of insurance. The main way of rewarding people would be from an incentive such as a premium discount."
At present, the only incentives for environmentally friendly motoring come in the form of road tax breaks for owners of hybrid vehicles, introduced by Gordon Brown at the last Budget.
A spokeswoman for Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance specialists, commented, "Giving drivers who show they care about the environment a discount is something the entire motor insurance trade is looking at.
"I'm sure it won't be long before motorists start to see some real benefits as a result of driving so-called 'green' cars."
