Government urged to do more to promote biofuel usage

There are many motorists who are worried about more than just getting a cheap car insurance quote. Another major concern for drivers is that of environmentally-friendly fuel, a topic that has been discussed in Parliament this week.

A report entitled "Climate change: the role of bioenergy" has been put forward by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (Efracom) and discusses the implications of bringing biofuel to the forefront of the fuels industry.

Biofuel can be made in either a gas or liquid form and is made from animal waste and plant materials such as sugar, wood and vegetable oil. It is a renewable source of energy and although not totally clean, is much better for the environment than the fuels that we currently use.

Efracom has been pushing for the British government to demand higher rates of biofuel use, with chairman Michael Jack saying that: "The government has got to show a much greater commitment, coherence and enthusiasm in the way it develops its bioenergy policies."

Other European countries, although admittedly larger, produce significantly more biofuel products than the UK. For example, in 2003 France and Germany combined had an output of around 100 times the amount that we see in Britain.

Michael Jack went on: "For a nation that prides itself on international leadership on the climate change agenda, it's not acceptable for Britain to lag behind so many other countries in the way that it is embracing bioenergy."

At present, biofuel accounts for 0.25% of the fuel used in the UK, whereas government targets state that it should be 5% by the year 2010.

Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services commented, "Many of our motor insurance customers are very supportive of the greater use of biofuels and some would even sacrifice their cheap car insurance quote to know that they are being eco- friendly when using their car."
