Icy windows threaten cheap car insurance

A massive 25% of motorists are risking their lives and their cheap car insurance by driving in cold weather without being able to see through the windscreen properly.

According to research by Churchill Car Insurance, a quarter of people instead prefer to peer through a small defrosted gap in the glass when they begin their journey, denying themselves proper visibility and putting other road users in danger.

The motor insurance firm discovered that on a snowy day in January 2003, the number of car accidents was double that of a normal day, with many being caused by badly defrosted windscreens.

Men proved to be the biggest culprits, with 31% admitting to being too impatient to clear their glass properly, compared with only 17% of women. In addition, drivers of both genders revealed that they don't always have de-icer or a scraper, but have used items such as CD cases, credit cards and cassette boxes to clear their windscreens.

Churchill Car Insurance's Frances Browning said, "It's worrying that drivers are not taking safety seriously in wintry weather.

Churchill's data shows that motorists are twice as likely to have an accident in treacherous weather conditions and are heightening their chances if they cannot properly see where they are going."
