Insurance firm reveal potential of hybrid cars
Motor insurance firm More Than has revealed data that shows a huge increase in the popularity of eco-friendly vehicles.
The cheap car insurance provider discovered that registrations of so-called hybrid vehicles in 2005 rose by 74% from 2004 figures, demonstrating that if current trends continue, the future of motoring is set to look very different. Powered partly by electric motors that recycle kinetic energy, hybrid vehicles consume less fuel than standard cars and also create significantly fewer CO2 emissions.
As well as an increase in the number of vehicles already on the road, More Than discovered that one in six UK drivers would consider the possibility of trading in their car for an electric or hybrid model if petrol prices continue to rise at current rates. They also predict that almost a billion hybrid vehicles would be on the world's roads within just 15 years.
More Than's head of car insurance, David Pitt, praised the increasing popularity of eco-friendly 'green' cars, saying, "Given the growing concern about global warming, it's encouraging that so many motorists are considering changing their driving habits.
"As awareness increases, I am sure we will see more innovation from the motoring industry, as well as incentives from the government to encourage motorists to become more eco-friendly."
