Insurance firm reveals company car truths

Britain's roads are packed with workers using company cars to go about their daily business, but new research from a car insurance firm has revealed that many people abuse the benefit, risking the wrath of an angry employer and possible disciplinary action.

Saga Motor Insurance surveyed 2,000 people and discovered that more than 20% use their company car as a "long-term joyride" instead of as a perk of the job.

In addition to using their car for legitimate business reasons, the employees questioned admitted to lending their car to friends and using it regularly outside of work hours for leisure activities, including taking trips to the tip. Somewhat disturbing if the vehicle is a pool car, 16% of those questioned also sheepishly admitted to making love on the back seat.

Car crashes and speeding are also regular occurrences for many of the 2,000 people questioned, and some admit to driving less carefully than they would if the vehicle was their own.

One company car driver, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, "I give my car a bit of welly, more so than probably I would if I owned it. And I don't have to worry about the motor insurance premium, so it's not that much of a problem if I have a crash."

A spokesperson from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance experts, said, "I'm not too sure Britain's bosses will be too pleased with the results of this survey.

"People really should be careful. Lending your company car to friends is definitely not advisable and could result in a whole host of motor insurance problems.

"As for using the back seat for extra-curricular activities, I really don't know what to say."
