Kwik-Fit cancels cheap policies after online oversight
Online car insurance provider Kwik-Fit has to cancel hundreds of motor insurance policies in the wake of a major administrative blunder.
The error involves new customers who clicked-through to Kwik-Fit after using a price comparison site to find a cheap car insurance quote.
To save these customers time, the Kwik-Fit computers had been issuing quotes based on information supplied by the comparison sites. It was assumed that users had supplied this information themselves.
But in fact, most comparison sites (which also have a commitment to saving surfers' time) make a number of assumptions about their users. Most significantly for Kwik-Fit, they assume you only have access to one car - the one you're getting a quote for.
People with access to two or more cars generally pay more for their motor insurance. But because this detail was going unnoticed, Kwik-Fit ended up undercharging them on their premiums.
Up to 800 online car insurance policies were sold before technical staff realised the oversight.
Kwik-Fit's response to the problem is to call up the unfortunate policy holders and, if their details don't match with those used to generate the quote, cancel the cover with a week's notice. They then offer a revised quote based on accurate personal information from the customer.
Plenty of disgruntled motorists are turning down the revised quotes, however, when they turn out to be significantly more expensive than before.
As an example: Julian Anderson, a Kwik-Fit policyholder from South Wales, baulked at the £1202.55 price tag on his revised car insurance quote.
His first premium had cost just £408.03.
