Man risks losing cheap car insurance rights after court appearance
A man has been remanded in custody after allegedly stealing a car before running over and killing a grandmother.
47-year-old Paul Wales now faces the possibility of a jail term, a ban from the road and the loss of his right to a cheap car insurance deal, and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on May 18th.
Wales, from the Walton area of Liverpool, is accused of stealing a Honda Civic in South Shields on May 11th, in which he then knocked down 48-year-old Pamela Phinn. The grandmother died instantly and her daughter and two grandchildren also received minor injuries.
There were scenes of great emotion in the magistrates' court as Wales was charged with robbery, causing death by dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, having no car insurance and damaging a police breathalyser.
He spoke only to confirm his name, age and date of birth and leant on the dock rails listening intently as the charges were read out. Wearing a bright yellow sweatshirt, he only glanced up at the public viewing gallery once, and as he was led down to the cells, a woman was heard to shout, "May you never sleep in peace again, you scum."
Rebecca Pearson from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance experts, commented, "Anybody who is found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving is likely to find motor insurance very expensive when they're finally allowed back on the road again."
