Man with no car insurance convicted of harassing ex-girlfriend
A man who appeared in court after causing a car accident whilst driving with no car insurance has also been sending his ex-girlfriend abusive and threatening text messages, Cambridge magistrates heard.
26-year-old Brian Plant fled the scene of the A1307 road accident in November 2005 after colliding with a female motorcyclist, but was arrested shortly after by police. As a result of the incident, the woman biker suffered a broken arm and was forced to have half of her leg amputated.
About the same time as his accident, Plant had been reported to the police by his ex, Leanne Grace, after he bombarded her with malicious text messages following the couple's separation. He threatened to pour petrol through her letterbox and set fire to it, as well as telling her that he wished she would die.
Pleading guilty to harassment, driving without due care, failing to stop after an accident and driving without car insurance, Plant was given a four-month suspended sentence, banned from his former girlfriend's street and ordered to pay £50 costs.
Despite causing serious injuries to another road user, Plant was not banned from driving and so must purchase motor insurance if he wishes to continue to use his vehicle. His conviction will mean that a good deal is harder to come by, but searching on the net should still get him a cheap car insurance deal.
