A man who already had six driving convictions has been sentenced for 150 days for driving a stolen Saab convertible straight into the path of a police car.

Unemployed David Marston, 21, of Bolton, collided head on with a police car after officers tried pull him over for driving the stolen vehicle. In the future, he could find it difficult getting a cheap motor insurance quote because of his criminal background.

Blackpool Magistrates' Court heard how Marston collided with the police car before reversing and driving straight into the vehicle again as it tried to move out of the way.

The owner of the Saab, Gary Hagan, was at home when the theft occurred. He was going on holiday at 6am but was woken by a relative at 4.30am asking why the car wasn't parked in the driveway.

Police saw the £20,000 stolen Saab in a nearby part of Bolton on July 16th with three men getting into the vehicle and lowering the electric roof. Police then tried to stop the vehicle by using their car lights and flashing their headlamps. However, Marston increased the speed of the Saab and drove straight into the direction of the police patrol car.

According to Marston, he had no idea the Saab was stolen and claims a friend came by with the car, asking him to drive it.

Marston was sentenced to 150 days imprisonment and banned from the road for two years.
