Cheap online car insurance last thing on mind for man whose car was wrecked by police
A man from Merseyside has more motoring worries than finding a cheap online car insurance deal after he allowed police to take his car for forensic testing.
Barry Lukes, 30, let the Merseyside force borrow his car to test for evidence following a stabbing - in which he was not in any way involved - in the front garden of his house. He was told that the car could prove important in finding out who committed the offence and would only be away for a few days.
Unfortunately, all did not go as planned. The Daewoo Nexia was returned a full two months later and in less than perfect condition. The undercarriage had been very seriously damaged in a way which seems to be consistent with being dropped from a jacked up position and the car is now not in a roadworthy state.
Mr Lukes commented: "It was bad enough having to wait for that length of time to get my car back, especially when I was helping the investigation.
"Now, I've been told the car is only fit for the scrapyard and is no doubt a deathtrap to drive. What happens if I get pulled by the police driving it? Will they let me off?
"I know there was a victim on the night, but I am also a victim as I am starting a new life with my fiancée and child out of pocket and without a car."
Mr Lukes has made a complaint with police over the incident and it is now been investigated further.
Corrine Aldous of online car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "It sounds like Mr Lukes is very unfortunate in having effectively lost his car by trying to help out. We hope that something can be arranged and that he won't have to make a claim on his motor insurance."
