Night of wanton vandalism risks motorists’ cheap car insurance
Residents of a street in Coventry are fearing the loss of their right to cheap car insurance after a night of mindless vandalism left a multitude of vehicles with severe damage.
Home-owners in Glencoe Road awoke yesterday morning to discover scratches up and down the side of their cars, many cutting through the paintwork and gouging deep into the metal underneath.
Repairs have been estimated at several hundred pounds, and an initial count revealed that 14 vehicles had been damaged, although it is possible that even more have suffered the vandals' wrath. Some of the residents have vowed to repair the destruction themselves, but others have found the scratches to be too deep and so are facing the unenviable job of notifying their car insurance company.
Jo Brummit, a 35-year-old IT technician, was appalled at the damage to her red Peugeot 206, and told reporters, "It looks like someone has run the end of a car aerial along the side of my car - it's completely out of order.
"One of the neighbours knocked on our door to tell us what had happened and it's just heartbreaking to see the damage done."
Another resident added, "Don't people realise that by doing this, our motor insurance will be hit? It is outrageous."
A spokeswoman from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance specialists, commented, "There's no place in society for mindless vandals like these, and the sooner the police catch the perpetrators, the better."
West Midland Police have confirmed they are investigating the damage.
