No cheap car insurance for man with 34 convictions

A Wigan man definitely won't be getting cheap car insurance in the near future after clocking up his 34th conviction for driving while disqualified.

Judges at Liverpool Crown Court finally lost patience with David Monks, sentencing him to 20 months in jail and banning him from the road for three years.

The court heard how the police spotted Monks driving while disqualified on April 7th 2005. They attempted to pull the Fiesta over but Monks sped off and proceeded to lead the officers in a high-speed chase through the centre of Wigan.

He reached speeds of 80mph through residential areas, went round two roundabouts the wrong way and jumped three red lights. A police helicopter was called to join in the pursuit and the fugitive was eventually captured after abandoning his car in a housing estate. He was found to be in possession of speed and was promptly arrested.

Appearing in court, Monks pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, possessing amphetamine and driving without motor insurance.

Judge Nigel Gilmour, QC, said, "It was atrocious driving for a long distance. It was extremely dangerous and it is hugely fortunate a collision with another vehicle did not take place as there would have been serious injury."

A spokesperson for Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, specialists in providing cheap car insurance, commented on the case, saying, "I've never heard of anybody being caught 34 times for driving illegally, but I'm sure the roads will be a safer place with this man behind bars."
