No more cheap car insurance for forgetful farmer
A farmer may struggle to find a cheap car insurance deal in the future after a run-in with a special constable resulted in a court appearance.
John Becket, from Scotby in Cumbria, was stopped by the officer on February 5th after it was noticed that the exhaust on his Ford Fiesta was almost dragging along the road. The policeman also asked the 56-year-old to show his motor insurance documents, but the farmer did not have them in the car and so agreed to bring them into the local station in the next few days.
A search of his home still did not uncover the elusive paperwork, so Becket rang his car insurance providers to ask for a new certificate to be sent out. The insurance company, however, had no record of him, and it was quickly discovered that he was not actually covered.
Mr Becket told Carlisle Magistrates' Court, "If it was not for the special constable this grave issue would not have come to my attention.
"I thought I had been paying it and I have three vehicles and I'd not realised it had not gone out of my account."
Pleading guilty to driving without motor insurance, Becket was given the lowest possible sentence by District Judge Victoria Rose, leaving the court with a £75 fine, six penalty points and £35 costs.
A spokesperson for Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, the cheap car insurance experts, said, "There is no excuse for not having valid motor insurance, and anyone found guilty of the crime is likely to lose their right to a cheap car insurance deal."
