Police officer could risk losing cheap car insurance
A police officer has escaped punishment after being convicted of dangerous driving for clocking up speeds of 159mph.
PC Milton was given an absolute discharge by District Judge Peter Wallis and escaped being given a disqualification or penalty points, which would have affected his cheap car insurance.
The officer for West Mercia Police was caught speeding in December 2003 when a camera fitted to his unmarked police car videotaped the Vauxhall Vectra on the M54 speeding at 159mph.
He was originally acquitted for the offence in May 2005 when a judge accepted Milton's defence of taking the car for a test run. This decision was overturned by the High Court and a re-trial was ordered.
Judge Wallis said, "I can see no need for punishment. He has suffered quite a lot over the last two-and-a-half years."
In the future, PC Mark Milton may find it difficult to get cheap car insurance after a guilty verdict given at Ludlow Magistrates Court on Friday will count as a criminal conviction.
Corrine Aldous, spokeswoman for Duck2Water Car Insurance, the cheap vehicle insurance provider said, "This case is an exception. Drivers who are caught speeding and have points added to their licence may risk losing their low cost insurance and find it difficult getting a cheap motor insurance quote in the future."
