Norwich Union close call centre after online insurance sales increase
Motor insurance call handlers have been told that they will lose their jobs when Norwich Union closes its Liverpool branch later this year.
The call centre which handles customer service calls for Norwich Union will close by 31st October 2006. The closure will create a total job loss of 321 jobs, 180 of those in motor insurance.
Norwich Union said that the call centre was closing because of the growth of online insurance sales, including online car insurance and will no longer need as many people to answer customer calls.
With competition from online sales companies offering cheap car insurance, Norwich Union has been forced to make job cuts.
Simon Machell, chief executive of Norwich Union Insurance, said: "It is always a difficult decision to close any part of our operation with the resulting impact on people and jobs, but we have to remain competitive in a constantly changing market"
