Car insurance provider closes Newcastle call centre
Online car insurance provider Zurich has announced it will be sending work overseas after closing its call centre in Newcastle.
A reported 500 people now face being made redundant when the branch closes in March 2007.
A spokeswoman for Zurich said, "There is still no decision on where these jobs will be transferred to but it will be a mix between Indian call centres and the UK."
The motor insurance provider said in a statement, "Zurich is proposing these changes following an operational review, which has led the business to conclude that it can improve effectiveness and efficiency by operating a across a small number of locations."
The closure of the Newcastle call centre will not have any effect on customers' online car insurance policies and drivers will still be able call one of Zurich's other branches for a vehicle insurance quote.
