Parents spend a fortune driving kids around

Research recently published by car insurance firm Esure has revealed that parents are spending up to £170,000 during the course of their lifetime on taxiing their children around.

This huge figure is based on the fact that the average child is driven 3,500 miles every year to leisure activities, parties and school until they finally reach the legal driving age of 17.

There's bad news for mothers as the motor insurance company's survey found that they spend 40% of their entire time behind the wheel ferrying their kids around, compared to just ten percent for men.

The most common reason for children begging lifts was to go shopping (68%), while 67% of parents drive their children to friends' houses, and 61% take their offspring to parties. The dreaded school run and lifts to sporting activities made up 42% and 48% respectively.

Esure's head of car insurance said, "Parents are really being given the run around by their kids when it comes to giving them free lifts. And considering the frequency and mileage involved, it's fortunate for children that they don't have to fork out taxi prices."
