Psychiatrist may lose her cheap car insurance after speeding fine

A speeding psychiatrist asked colleagues to lie to police because she feared she would lose her licence and cheap car insurance.

Dr Meenakshi Bakshi of Bankside, Swindon, was travelling to a seminar at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, when she was photographed in her Toyota speeding at 60mph in a 40mph zone in April last year.

She had only recently passed her driving test and was benefiting from having cheap motor insurance.

After receiving a £40 fine and three points on her licence, she asked her line manager to tell police that she was racing on the M4 to get to an emergency, a London tribunal heard.

Dr Bakshi was worried she would lose her licence after already acquiring three points shortly after passing her test. She also feared she might have to pay higher prices for online car insurance in the future.

In a further attempt to cover her tracks, she asked the company secretary to change the roster so it would have said she had been working the day of the speeding fine.

Dr Bakshi was cautioned by Avon and Somerset Police for making a false letter from her manager to try and have the speeding fine dropped.

The psychiatrist later apologised to the General Medical Council's fitness to practice panel and admitted that what she did was wrong.

With added points on her licence, Dr Bakshi may find it difficult to get cheap car insurance in the future.
