Retail giant branches out into car insurance market

You might normally pop in for touch-up paint or spare bulbs, or even to buy a bike, but now car part retailing giant Halfords are preparing to offer cheap car insurance too.

The firm has teamed up with Royal & SunAlliance to offer customers a range of financial services including pet cover, travel insurance and also cycle and motor insurance. In addition, they plan to offer a policy to protect in-car technology such as sat-nav equipment and speed camera detectors.

Information pamphlets about the new services are being distributed to all of Halfords' 402 UK and Irish stores, and shoppers will also be able to access the services via the retailer's website, from where they will be directed to Royal & SunAlliance to enquire about the price of a policy.

As well as cheap car insurance, Halfords are also planning to offer breakdown cover in conjunction with the Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators. Lex Vehicle Finance are completing the firm's new ventures with a deal to produce a car-buying scheme enabling consumers an affordable route to buying a new car.

Discussing the company's entry into the car insurance market, Halfords' Paul Joyner said, "We have a strong affinity with the motoring and leisure public, so this is a logical extension of our core retail offer. All the products have been developed for Halfords, taking into account the factors our customers care for."
