Motor insurance worry over incorrect sat nav advice

The number of motorists who have satellite navigation systems in their cars is growing rapidly, with more than one in eight now having one installed.

Sat nav systems give route guidance and most offer a traffic alert system that provides information about upcoming queues or road blockages so that drivers can be diverted around a problem area, allowing them to get to their destination as quickly as possible.

However, a report by the consumer body Which? has shown that many people have had problems with their sat nav systems, some of which have even come close to causing drivers to enter rivers.

Which? tested some of the most popular devices to see if any problems would come to light. It was found that 14% of them sent drivers down dirt tracks, whilst others prompted motorists to perform risky manoeuvres in the road.

It is feared that sat nav systems could cause many car accidents if drivers follow their advice too closely. These crashes could result in both injury and higher motor insurance quotes in the future for the drivers involved.

Sat nav systems have also been blamed for distracting drivers, which can also result in accidents and costly car insurance claims.

"Although sat nav systems can be really useful for getting you to your destination quickly, it's important for drivers to remember that these devices do have limits and to employ common sense when taking their advice."
