Poll finds tailgaters should risk cheap car insurance

Research has shown that many motorists want tailgaters to put their cheap car insurance at risk by getting points on their license.

Tailgating is extremely dangerous because if the car in front has to come to a stop quickly, it is likely that the person behind will not be able to brake in time and will crash into the rear end of their car. This often leads to the tailgater having to make a claim on their motor insurance, resulting in a higher premium to pay.

Further to this, GEM Motoring Assist carried out a survey that found 83% of drivers would approve of a change in the law to make tailgating an endorsable offence. If a motorist got caught tailgating, they would receive points on their license, which means they are unlikely to get a cheap car insurance deal.

David Williams of GEM Motoring Assist, said, "Currently a driver who indulges in the risky and very dangerous business of 'sitting' too close to the car in front has to have the offence of driving without due care and attention proved against him."

"We don't think that is good enough and the public clearly agree."
