Tired drivers put lives at risk

Millions of drivers all across Britain could be risking not only their cheap car insurance, but also their lives by driving while tired, a recent survey suggests.

Research undertaken by the RAC found that half of those questioned said they drove when sleepy, and a third admitted to being close to falling asleep behind the wheel.

A massive 11% of motorists had risked lives by driving more than 500 miles without taking a break, and a worrying 20% were unaware of measures they could take to stay more alert. Almost 70% of those questioned revealed they thought winding the window down could stave off fatigue, while one in three admitted to turning up the stereo to keep themselves more awake.

A spokesman from the RAC said, "It's crucial that we take the time to plan breaks and recognise when our bodies need a rest, to ensure we are capable of staying alert and able to concentrate to protect both our own, and other people's safety."

Rebecca Pearson from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, a leading online provider of cheap car insurance, commented, "Driving whilst tired really is enormously dangerous and can slow your reaction times.

"If you fall asleep at the wheel, you are putting your own, and other people's lives at risk."
