Speed cameras fail to convince public

A UK online car insurance provider has discovered that speed cameras are not where the public wants to see road safety funds going.

The debate about speed cameras has been raging for years now, but it appears that the people who hate them now far outweigh those who like them. swiftcover.com found that only one person in 20 wants more money to be pumped into speed cameras.

Other methods of speed reduction on the UK's roads include police speed traps, vehicle activated signs, and road humps. It seems that, according to the UK online car insurance company, seven out of eight motorists support these alternative methods, with just an eighth believing that speed cameras are most effective.

The chief executive of swiftcover.com, Andrew Blowers, commented, "It is clear from our research that speed cameras have emerged as the scourge of the 21st century motorist.

"People are fed up with the imposition of speed cameras on every corner but, more importantly, believe that they are failing to fulfil their key objective of improving road safety."

Penalty points for speeding cause the loss of cheap motor insurance for tens of thousands of motorists each year.
