Uninsured driver faces prison

A disqualified driver with no motor insurance rammed a stolen car at a police vehicle, a court has heard.

William Williams ripped the door off the police car during the incident, before crashing into a parked car containing a woman and her young child. He also narrowly missed hitting a police officer.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that 22-year-old Williams, who has a record of serious offending, stole the Ford Fiesta on November 10th 2005 from outside a doctor's surgery in the city's Montgomery Street .

He was then spotted driving the vehicle the next day, despite having no car insurance, and police sped to the scene. They attempted to corner the thief in a cul-de-sac, but he rammed a patrol car in an attempt to escape, before hitting a lamp post and smashing intoa parked Peugeot.

A mother had only just finished strapping her child into the rear seat of the Peugeot and had climbed into the driver's seat only seconds before the impact.

William Williams pleaded guilty to stealing the Fiesta, driving dangerously while disqualified and without car insurance, and will be sentenced following the completion of background reports. A prison sentence is likely for the young Scot, however, especially as he also headbutteda custody officer while awaiting trial.
