Cheap car insurance news- Commercial vehicle drivers advised to check car insurance

Business people who drive commercial vehicles are being warned not to risk their right to a cheap car insurance deal by getting caught out at the wheel of other cars.

The majority of motor insurance companies provide third party cover to allow drivers named on the policy to use other cars in an emergency, but commercial vehicle policies are different. They normally do not include cover for the policy holder when they are using another car, and so many drivers could find themselves in hot water if they have an accident.

Jacquie Watson from Darlington-based car insurance firm BiB explained, "A typical example might be someone who spends most of the time driving a van for their business, say a plumber or electrician, and assumes that the insurance policy they have on that vehicle also covers them to drive their wife's car.

"With 99% of policies this isn't the case. The driver would have to be named separately on their wife's policy to be insured; they can't rely on their own commercial vehicle insurance to cover them."

A spokeswoman from Duck2Water Car Insurance Services, a top online provider of cheap car insurance, added, "It always pays to check any motor insurance policy carefully, including the small print, to see which vehicles you're entitled to drive."
