New database to combat fraud
A new car insurance database is being set up to help combat car insurance fraud, which is estimated to cost up to £500m a year.
A common form of fraud is insuring the same vehicle with multiple insurers, and then staging an accident to claim multiple times.
The new database, which combines information held by individual insurers with some held by the police, will make it much easier to spot these fraudulent claims.
The Association of British Insurers comment that dishonest claims are paid for by the premiums of honest drivers, and so cutting fraud will benefit everyone.
