Drivers 'lie for cheaper car insurance'
According to a survey from RAC Financial Services, as many as 10% of drivers lie when making car insurance applications.
Around 25% have driven without an MoT certificate and about the same number have cut corners on insurance to keep costs down.
In addition, 18% have been on the road with an expired tax disc and 9% own up to driving without car insurance at some point.
When it comes to deception, 11% admit lying about where they keep their car. Pretending a vehicle is kept overnight in a locked garage is the most common falsehood.
At the same time, a quarter of British car owners are taking out minimal motor insurance cover to keep the cost of their premiums down.
RAC Financial Services spokesman Philip Hale said: "All these behaviours are illegal and driving uninsured is a particular concern."But we should also recognise most are not people wilfully setting out to break the law. The pressure of the £100 a week it takes to run the average car is forcing many otherwise honest motorists to cut corners."
