The Toyota Prius won of the European Car of the Year award in 2005, beating finalists including the Citroen C4, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Renault Modus and BMW I-series. The Prius is a 5 door hatchback with front wheel drive, and is said by many to be the first practical electric/petrol hybrid car. The Prius has an engine system known as the “Hybrid Synergy Drive.” It runs on electrical power for normal driving, switching to petrol for cruising, which recharges the battery. Its hybrid power means that it offers an excellent rate of 65.7 mpg for urban driving, and has absolutely no emissions whilst using just the electrical motor. It is an extremely eco-friendly car and has won awards including “Best Fuel Economy” and “Best 1.4-1.8 litre engine”. |
The Toyota Prius is futuristic in its design. It is very spacious inside and a computer screen is embedded into the dashboard, which also sports an extremely clear digital speedometer.
It has been given an excellent safety status with a 5 star NCAP crash test rating. It boasts 8 airbags and has a strengthened shell to reduce buckling in the event of an accident. The brake lights are LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) rather than bulbs, meaning that they should last the life of the vehicle and also that they illuminate much quicker – up to 10 times quicker in fact – when braking, providing the cars following you vital extra moments in which to react to hard braking.
It is practically silent when it is running on its electric motor – both a positive and a negative fact. It is wonderful for the occupants of the car, but the lack of noise could present a danger to pedestrians relying on their hearing to judge the distance of oncoming vehicles.
